Interview with Michael Hübner

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering, and how did your journey lead you to Lightweight?

Michael Hübner:

"Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the mechanics and dynamics of machines. This curiosity drove me to study mechanical engineering, where I specialized in lightweight construction and materials. Joining Lightweight was a natural progression, as the company is a leader in innovative carbon fiber technology, aligning perfectly with my passion and expertise. So I started here right after university with first lightweight-specific projects, but also getting in touch with R&D-projects in other industries before I became Head of R&D – sporting goods."

Lightweight is known for its innovative use of carbon fiber. Can you elaborate on the unique engineering challenges and advantages associated with working with this material?

Michael Hübner:

"Carbon fiber is a remarkable material due to its high strength- and stiffness-to-weight ratio, but it comes with its own set of challenges. One significant challenge is the complex manufacturing process, which requires precision and expertise to ensure quality and consistency. Additionally, working with carbon fiber demands a thorough understanding of its properties to optimize structural performance while minimizing weight. The advantages, however, are substantial—improved performance, fuel efficiency, and durability are just a few. At Lightweight, we continually push the boundaries of what's possible with carbon fiber, constantly refining our techniques and applications."

How does Lightweight balance innovation with practicality in the design and production of its products?

Michael Hübner:

"Innovation and practicality are two sides of the same coin at Lightweight. We approach this balance by integrating cutting-edge technology with real-world application. Our design process starts with extensive research and development, including computational modeling and rigorous testing. We also maintain close relationships with our customers and partners to understand their needs and challenges. This feedback loop ensures that our innovative solutions are not only technologically advanced but also practical and beneficial in everyday use."

What role does sustainability play in Lightweight's engineering and manufacturing processes?

Michael Hübner:

"Sustainability is a core principle at Lightweight. We recognize the environmental impact of manufacturing processes and are committed to reducing our carbon footprint. This commitment manifests in several ways: optimizing manufacturing techniques to minimize waste, developing products that enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions in their respective applications and designing our products for a maximum lifespan. We also invest in recycling and reusing materials wherever possible. By prioritizing sustainability, we aim to contribute to a greener future while maintaining our high standards of quality and performance."

As a lead engineer, how do you foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within your team?

Michael Hübner:

"Fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration starts with creating an environment where team members feel valued and encouraged to share their ideas. I prioritize open communication, continuous learning, and cross-disciplinary teamwork. We regularly hold brainstorming sessions and workshops to explore new concepts and technologies. Additionally, I believe in empowering my team by providing them with the tools and resources they need to experiment and develop their ideas. Recognizing and rewarding creativity and collaboration also play a crucial role in maintaining an innovative spirit within the team."
